The Ohio Department of Job & Family Services is partnering with Hilton Worldwide and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies to bring the Hilton HHonors Military Program to Ohio. The program provides free hotel accommodations to military veterans searching for jobs outside the regions where they live. (July 2015)

The Department of Veterans Affairs today published a new regulation that expands eligibility for some benefits for a select group of Air Force and Air Force Reserve personnel who were exposed to the herbicide Agent Orange through regular and repeated contact with contaminated C-123 aircraft that had been used in Vietnam as part of Operation Ranch Hand.  If you believe you may be affected by this new regulation, or you know someone who may be affected, please contact our office and speak with one of our Service Officers at (419)898-2089. Military Women Across the Nation is offering one $1,500.00 scholarship, to a relative, male or female, of a military woman.  The essay topic is "Women at War".  (January 2015)


Are you, or was your spouse, a 100% service connected veteran?  If so, have you applied for the Homestead Exemption for Disabled Veterans and Surviving Spouses?  Applications are now available at the Ottawa County Veterans Service Office or the Ottawa County Auditors Office.  A copy of the disability rating must accompany the completed application.  (January 2015)


The FBI is advising current and former members of the military to review their social media accounts to avoid posts that might attract attention from the group calling itself the Islamic State(ISIS/ISIL) and its supporters.  The FBI and Homeland Security note that the Islamic State group already has already publicly encouraged attacks against law enforcement and military service members.  As alway, take great care in what information you are publishing and consider increasing your social media privacy options. National Wreaths Across America Day is Saturday, December 13, 2014 and we will celebrate and honor this day with five wreath laying ceremonies to be held simultaneously at 11:00 am. Ceremonies will be conducted at the following cemeteries: Harrie-Elmore Union, Elmore Ohio; Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa Ohio; Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor Ohio; Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton Ohio; and Sackett Cemetery, Marblehead Ohio.  The public is invited and encouraged to attend a ceremony of their choosing. Today is the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings which saw 156,000 troops from the allied countries join forces and launch an audacious attack on the beaches of Normandy, these assaults are credited with the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany. We salute those troops who endured significant feats and honor their service and dedication. (June 6, 2014)

The Department of Veterans Affairs is implementing a comprehensive national VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP) to give enrolled veterans and CHAMPVA beneficiaries the opportunity to purchase dental insurance through Delta Dental and MetLife at a reduced cost. Participation is voluntary. Purchasing a dental plan does not affect veterans’ eligibility for VA dental services and treatment.  (May 2014)


The Department of Veterans Affairs announced a new, secure identification card called the Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC).  New enrollees have been receiving the updated VHIC card.  The VA is putting forth the effort to automatically send an updated card to veterans previously enrolled in the healthcare system. On August 6, 2012, President Obama signed into legislation "The Honoring America's Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012".  The Act provides for treatment of service members and their families who were exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune as well as other provisions relating to privacy at military funerals, state care of veterans who are 70% service connected or greater, veteran sexual assault prevention and a pilot program for veterans with PTSD.
